Cataract Surgery
What is a cataract?
A cataract is cloudiness of the crystalline lens in our eye. It most commonly develops as a result of normal aging. However, it can also be present after birth (congenital), associated with trauma, as a result of medication use such as steroids.
Cataracts can cause a range of symptoms that gradually impact vision and daily life. Initially, individuals may notice blurriness or cloudiness in their vision, often compared to looking through a foggy window. This can progress to increased sensitivity to light, difficulty seeing at night, and seeing halos around lights. As the cataract develops, colours may appear faded, and double vision may occur in a single eye.
Some people also experience frequent changes in their glasses or contact lens prescription as the cataract alters the eye's refractive properties. These symptoms can worsen over time, making activities such as reading and driving increasingly challenging. Identifying and addressing these symptoms promptly is crucial for maintaining optimal eye health and overall well-being.
Why do I need cataract surgery?
As cataracts develop, they can significantly impede daily activities and cataract surgery becomes essential to restore clear vision and enhance overall quality of life. During the procedure, Dr Li will remove the clouded lens and replace it with an artificial intraocular lens, allowing you to regain clear vision and resume your normal activities with improved visual acuity.
How is cataract surgery performed?
Typically, the surgery is conducted as a day case and does not require an overnight hospital stay. Dr Li usually performs the operation after numbing the eye with local anaesthetic and a specialist anaesthetist will provide some light sedation.
Dr Li performs cataract surgery using a minimally invasive technique with small wound of 2.4mm. She uses a technique called phacoemulsification, where an ultrasonic device is used to break up the cloudy lens, which is then removed through the small incision in the eye. Once the natural lens is removed, an artificial intraocular lens is implanted in its place. This surgery is generally highly successful in restoring clear vision for the patient. After the surgery, Dr Li will provide you with post-operative care instructions to ensure proper healing and optimal vision outcomes.
Which type of lens will give me the best vision after cataract surgery?
Before cataract surgery, patients have several intraocular lens (IOL) options to consider based on their unique visual needs. Dr Li specialises in the use of premium lenses to help improve your vision for both distance and near, tailored to your needs. During the consultation, she will discuss with you the options are applicable to you. These include:
Monofocal IOLs are commonly used and provide clear vision at one distance, often requiring the use of glasses for intermediate and near vision. However, monofocal ensures the best quality of vision.
Toric IOLs to address astigmatism, reducing the need for corrective lenses post-surgery.
Trifocal and extended depth of focus (EDOF) IOLs are premium lenses designed to provide clear vision at multiple distances, potentially reducing dependence on glasses for tasks such as reading and using digital devices.
During your consultation, Dr Li will help you understand the benefits and potential trade-offs of each IOL option, ensuring a choice that aligns with their visual goals and lifestyle.
